In a robust crackdown on environmental sanitation violations, Abia State authorities arrested 110 defaulters during the recent monthly sanitation exercise across Umuahia.
These offenders were apprehended by the state’s Task Force for activities including loitering, trading during restricted hours, and engaging in non-compliance behaviors such as playing football on the streets between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., designated as cleanup hours.
The arrested individuals were arraigned before a mobile sanitation court under Magistrate Onyinyechi Ibekwe. The government emphasized its commitment to enforcing the law, noting improvements in compliance compared to prior months. However, officials also expressed dismay at continued infractions, particularly in areas like illegal waste dumping.
Abia State’s Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, lauded the growing adherence to sanitation rules while stressing the need for stricter measures to curb violations. Plans are underway to establish mobile courts at marketplaces to enhance enforcement efficiency. Meanwhile, the government is addressing previous complaints of extortion by security personnel during such exercises, which reportedly affected earlier sanitation drives.
This initiative reflects the state’s drive to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment while tackling systemic issues that hinder progress. The arrests highlight the government’s resolve to uphold environmental laws and promote public responsibility in maintaining sanitary conditions.
