FG Sacks Nnamdi Azikiwe University VC, Dissolves Governing Council

In a surprise move, the Federal Government of Nigeria has sacked the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Professor Bernard Odoh, along with the university’s Governing Council. This decision was made after the government discovered that the council had illegally appointed Odoh without following due process.

According to Folashade Boriowo, the Director of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry of Education, the government’s action is aimed at preventing further destabilization of the institution. The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized the need for urgent measures to address the situation, citing the council’s disregard for lawful directives from the Federal Ministry of Education.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had previously accused the Governing Council of failing to follow the proper procedures in appointing Odoh. The union had alleged that the appointment was made without adhering to the established guidelines and regulations governing university appointments.

The university’s Governing Council had defended its appointment of Odoh, stating that due process was followed. However, the government’s investigation revealed that the council’s actions were in breach of the laws governing the university.

The Federal Government’s decision to sack the Vice Chancellor and dissolve the Governing Council is seen as a bold move to restore order and ensure accountability in the institution. The government’s action is also expected to address the lingering crisis and instability that has plagued the university in recent times.

The development is likely to have significant implications for the university’s administration and academic activities. Students, staff, and stakeholders are eagerly awaiting the next steps and the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor.

In a statement, the Ministry of Education assured that the decision was made in the best interest of the university and the nation. The ministry also pledged to work towards restoring normalcy and ensuring the smooth operation of the institution.

The sack of Professor Odoh and the dissolution of the Governing Council is a clear indication of the Federal Government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that institutions are run in accordance with established guidelines and regulations.

As the university community awaits the next developments, many are hopeful that this decision will mark the beginning of a new era of stability and progress for Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
