Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), recently called on governors in Northern Nigeria to address the region’s worsening electricity crisis, highlighting how frequent blackouts are crippling communities and businesses. Northern states are facing longer outages, with many families and enterprises relying on costly fuel and diesel alternatives to survive.

Kwankwaso criticized local and federal authorities for their insufficient response to the crisis, stressing that northern communities are reaching a breaking point. He linked these electricity issues to other economic hardships affecting the region, including inflation, high fuel prices, and a steep rise in the cost of living—conditions that he says are making daily life unbearable for average Nigerians.

According to Kwankwaso, these conditions reflect the government’s failure to provide adequate infrastructure and basic services, which has left the North disproportionately vulnerable to economic shocks.

The NNPP leader’s comments come as his political influence continues to grow, particularly among dissatisfied northern voters. Kwankwaso warned that without urgent action, this situation could fuel political realignment in the 2027 general elections, as northern citizens seek leaders who are more responsive to their needs.

Kwankwaso’s call also highlights broader concerns over energy infrastructure nationwide, where electricity issues have been worsened by recent fuel subsidy removals, pushing even more citizens to rely on the strained power grid.

This has created a difficult environment for northern industries, which now face higher operational costs or the prospect of downsizing. Residents in rural and urban areas alike are struggling to maintain basic living standards, with energy costs rising alongside food and transportation expenses.

Kwankwaso’s statements reflect a rising urgency among citizens, as many hope for reforms that can restore reliable electricity. His appeal to northern governors underscores the need for a sustainable and consistent energy solution to stabilize the region’s economy and bring immediate relief to affected households and businesses.
