Uganda is ramping up efforts to attract foreign investment in its agriculture sector, with a new push targeting Bangladesh. Uganda’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, recently hosted key business figures and government officials in Dhaka, urging them to explore the vast opportunities within Uganda’s agricultural landscape.

In his remarks, the envoy highlighted Uganda’s fertile land, favorable climate, and strategic position as key advantages for agricultural investment. He pointed out that agriculture remains a cornerstone of Uganda’s economy, employing over 70% of the population and contributing about 23% to the nation’s GDP.

The ambassador emphasized Uganda’s untapped potential in key agricultural sectors such as coffee, tea, maize, horticulture, and dairy. “Our country is blessed with abundant natural resources and a youthful workforce. Bangladesh investors have a golden opportunity to not only earn high returns but also contribute to food security and economic growth in Uganda,” he stated.

To make Uganda more attractive, the envoy highlighted recent policy reforms aimed at improving the ease of doing business, including tax incentives, land acquisition policies, and improved infrastructure. He also noted Uganda’s participation in regional trade blocs like the East African Community (EAC) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which offer investors access to larger markets.

Bangladesh, known for its textile and pharmaceutical exports, has shown interest in diversifying its investments into agriculture and agro-processing in Africa. The two countries have been strengthening diplomatic and trade ties in recent years, with Uganda exporting coffee, tea, and raw materials to Bangladesh.

This latest engagement between Uganda and Bangladesh is part of a broader strategy to deepen economic cooperation, especially in areas with mutual benefits. With this growing partnership, Uganda hopes to position itself as a preferred destination for Bangladeshi investment, particularly in the agricultural sector.
