Nigeria to Launch New Malaria Vaccine

Nigeria is set to become one of the first countries to introduce a new malaria vaccine, following the arrival of 846,200 doses. This vaccine, known as R21, was developed by researchers at the University of Oxford and produced by the Serum Institute of India in collaboration with Novavax.

Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate emphasized that these doses mark a significant step in Nigeria’s fight against malaria, which remains a critical public health issue. The disease, transmitted by mosquitoes, thrives in water and is particularly prevalent during the rainy season. In Nigeria, nearly 97 percent of the population is at risk, and the country accounts for 31 percent of global malaria-related deaths, according to the World Health Organization.

The Nigerian Health Ministry announced that the vaccine will be provided free of charge. Initially, a pilot rollout will occur in Kebbi and Bayelsa, the two states with the highest malaria rates. Following this trial, the vaccination program is expected to expand across the country.

In addition to the initial shipment, another 153,800 doses are scheduled to arrive on October 26, increasing the total to one million doses available for distribution. The initiative has been made possible through a partnership with the global Vaccine Alliance, Gavi, which aims to improve vaccine access in underserved areas.

This new vaccination effort is part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to eliminate malaria, with health officials hopeful that it will significantly reduce the disease’s impact on the population. As the rollout begins, the focus will be on educating communities about the vaccine and its importance in combating malaria.
