Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has publicly lauded France for its unwavering support in Morocco’s ongoing efforts to assert sovereignty over Western Sahara. This comes as Rabat continues to gain diplomatic ground in its decades-long dispute over the territory, a matter that has drawn significant international attention.

In a statement issued during a high-level meeting, the Moroccan monarch expressed gratitude to the French government, acknowledging its crucial role in backing Morocco’s claim. France, a close ally of Morocco and one of the country’s top trading partners, has long supported the North African nation’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony. The King emphasized that this support has been instrumental in rallying more nations behind Morocco’s sovereignty initiative.

Over the past few years, Morocco has scored key diplomatic wins, notably with the United States recognizing its claim to Western Sahara in 2020 under the Trump administration. The momentum continues, with several African and Arab nations shifting their stance in favor of Morocco. These gains, the King asserted, have emboldened Morocco’s position on the global stage, further isolating the Polisario Front, a separatist movement that seeks independence for the region.

Western Sahara, located on Africa’s northwest coast, has been the subject of a protracted dispute between Morocco and the Polisario Front since Spain withdrew in 1975. The territory is rich in phosphates and has access to abundant offshore fishing grounds, making it strategically important.

As diplomatic support for Morocco’s autonomy plan grew, King Mohammed VI reaffirmed his commitment to finding a peaceful resolution while continuing to strengthen the nation’s international alliances.
