UN Disappointed by South Sudan’s Transitional Period Extension to 2027

The United Nations has expressed deep disappointment regarding the decision to extend South Sudan’s transitional period until February 2027. Nicholas Haysom, head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), voiced his concerns during an extraordinary meeting of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission in Juba on Wednesday. He stated, “While the UN will endorse the extension of the transitional period, we do so with real regret and disappointment.”

The meeting gathered government officials, diplomats, and representatives from civil society and regional stakeholders to discuss the extension, which was initially set to end in 2024. Haysom pointed out that this situation mirrors one from two years ago when the UN supported an extension under the promise that there would be no further delays. He lamented that South Sudan is not prepared for credible elections.

The country is currently grappling with several challenges, including a stalled peace process, severe economic difficulties, and widespread flooding, which have hindered progress. Many key goals from the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement remain unfulfilled.

Prosper Addo, Senior Political Officer of the African Union Mission in South Sudan (AUMISS), supported the extension due to these ongoing difficulties. He emphasized that the election commission and security sector were not adequately prepared, making the extension necessary.

As the transitional period continues, there is an urgent need for decisive action and clear timelines to restore public trust in the peace process. Haysom urged South Sudan’s leaders to focus on the nation’s interests, promote an inclusive political environment, and engage all stakeholders to break the cycle of prolonged transitions.

The extension now places significant pressure on South Sudan’s leadership to implement vital reforms and guide the country toward much-anticipated elections.
