American rapper Fatman Scoop has sadly passed away at the age of 53. His representative confirmed to the BBC that he died after collapsing during a concert in Connecticut on Friday.
The rapper was in the middle of his set at Town Center Park in Hamden when he suddenly collapsed on stage. Hamden’s Mayor, Lauren Garrett, shared on Facebook that Fatman Scoop was immediately rushed to a local hospital by ambulance.
In a statement to the BBC, his booking agency, MN2S, confirmed his death, saying that the “legacy” of the New York native will “live on through his timeless music.”
“Scoop was a beloved figure in the music world, with countless fans worldwide who admired his work,” a spokesperson from the agency stated. “His iconic voice, infectious energy, and vibrant personality left an indelible mark on the industry.”
Fatman Scoop was a significant figure in New York City’s hip-hop scene during the 1990s. He gained widespread recognition for his features on hits like Missy Elliott’s Grammy-winning track “Lose Control” and Mariah Carey’s “It’s Like That.”
One of his most notable successes was his sleeper hit “Be Faithful,” originally released in 1999. The song gained international acclaim after being re-released in 2003, topping charts in both Ireland and the UK.
In 2004, the rapper appeared on the UK TV series *Chancers* on Channel 4, which showcased musicians mentoring aspiring UK artists seeking success in the US.
Fatman Scoop also participated in *Celebrity Big Brother 16: UK vs USA* in 2015, where he was the third housemate to be evicted.
His tour manager, DJ Pure Cold, expressed his grief in an Instagram post, saying he was “lost for words” upon hearing the news of his friend’s passing. “You took me around the world and allowed me to perform with you on some of the biggest and greatest stages,” he wrote. “The things you taught me have truly shaped the man I am today.”
Fatman Scoop was scheduled to perform at the UK Reminisce Festival on September 7. The festival’s organizers described the news of his death as “devastating” in an Instagram post. “He wasn’t just one of our most popular performers; he was also a cherished member of the Reminisce family,” they said. “We will miss his energy, talent, and infectious spirit more than words can express.”
