Devastating Floods Claim 31 Lives and Displace Thousands in Northern Sudan
Severe floods have ravaged northern Sudan, claiming at least 31 lives and destroying numerous homes. Over the past two days, torrential rains have inundated several communities and villages, leading to significant devastation.
According to Qureshi Hussein, a spokesperson for the Sudanese Civil Defense, the floods have caused considerable loss of life and property. Many residents, such as Yassin Abdul Wahab, have been left homeless. Wahab described the dire situation, noting that “people are sleeping in the streets” and that he is currently constructing a makeshift shelter from the remains of his collapsed home.
The floods have affected more than 317,000 people across Sudan this month. Of those impacted, 118,000 have been displaced, worsening an already severe displacement crisis caused by ongoing conflict in the country. The conflict, which erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has now lasted 500 days, further complicating humanitarian efforts.
The situation remains critical as rescue and relief operations continue in the flood-affected areas.
