The Delegation of the European Union, in collaboration with the diplomatic missions of EU Member States in Libya, has joined forces with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to express deep concern over recent unilateral actions by various Libyan political actors and institutions.
These actions, taken without broad consultation or consensus, are alarming as they contribute to escalating tensions, deepen already existing institutional divisions, and hinder the progress needed to achieve national reconciliation in Libya.
Such unilateral moves threaten to derail the fragile peace process that has been painstakingly built over the years.
At this critical juncture, the EU and its Member States emphasize the urgent need for all Libyan stakeholders to put the nation’s interests first. This means prioritizing the well-being and aspirations of the Libyan people above individual or factional agendas.
The current situation calls for a renewed commitment to the principles laid out in the Libyan Political Agreement, including its subsequent amendments and the relevant resolutions passed by the United Nations Security Council.
These frameworks provide a viable path toward peace and stability in Libya, and adherence to them is crucial to preventing further conflict and division.
Dialogue, compromise, and de-escalation are imperative at this moment. The EU urges all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue, recognizing that compromise is necessary for the greater good.
It is only through open communication and a willingness to find common ground that Libya can move forward toward a peaceful and stable future.
The European Union reaffirms its unwavering support for the United Nations’ efforts to facilitate an inclusive, Libyan-led political process. The EU calls on UNSMIL to take the lead in initiating a comprehensive process that safeguards Libya’s sovereignty, unity, and stability.
This process must also restore legitimacy to Libya’s institutions, ultimately leading to the organization of national elections that reflect the will of the Libyan people.
