In a tragic series of events, four boats carrying African migrants capsized off the coasts of Yemen and Djibouti, resulting in at least two confirmed deaths and 186 individuals reported missing, according to the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The incidents occurred late Thursday, with two vessels sinking in Yemeni waters. These boats were transporting 181 migrants alongside five Yemeni crew members, all of whom remain unaccounted for. Rescue operations managed to save two crew members, but the vast majority are still missing.
Simultaneously, two additional boats capsized off the coast of Djibouti. Rescuers recovered two bodies, and all other passengers on these vessels were rescued. Local officials attributed these accidents to strong winds that likely destabilized the small, overloaded boats.
The passengers, primarily Ethiopian migrants, including 57 women, were attempting the perilous journey across the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, aiming to reach Gulf countries in search of better economic opportunities. This route is notoriously dangerous due to unseaworthy vessels, overcrowding, and adverse weather conditions.
Yemen serves as a major transit point for migrants from East Africa and the Horn of Africa endeavoring to reach wealthier Gulf nations. In 2023, the number of migrants arriving in Yemen reached 97,200, a significant increase from previous years. However, these journeys are fraught with danger, as migrants often face treacherous desert treks, hazardous sea crossings, and violent encounters with smugglers and border guards.
Over the past decade, at least 2,082 migrants have disappeared along this route, including 693 known to have drowned. Currently, approximately 380,000 migrants are in Yemen, underscoring the scale of this ongoing humanitarian issue.

The IOM has been actively working to provide aid and facilitate the return of the most vulnerable migrants. However, the organization faces challenges due to the widespread violence, exploitation, and lack of global attention to this crisis. The recent tragedies highlight the urgent need for increased international support and comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and rights of migrants undertaking these perilous journeys.
As search and rescue operations continue, the international community is called upon to address the root causes of such dangerous migrations, including poverty, conflict, and climate change, to prevent further loss of life and human suffering.
