The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, of defying a court order by conducting the recent local government (LG) elections, calling the exercise illegal and a clear disregard for the rule of law.

In a statement released on Friday, the APC described the local government poll, held under the supervision of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC), as a “brazen act of illegality.” The party argued that a standing court order had placed an injunction on the conduct of the election, yet the state government proceeded regardless.

The APC’s spokesperson in Osun State, Kola Olabisi, condemned Governor Adeleke for what he termed a β€œtotal contempt for the judiciary,” warning that such actions threaten the foundations of democracy in the state. β€œThis is a dangerous precedent. The governor has acted in total disregard of the law, undermining the integrity of our democratic institutions,” Olabisi said.

The state government, however, defended its decision to conduct the poll. Speaking through his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Oluomo Sunday Bisi, Governor Adeleke maintained that the election was in line with constitutional provisions, arguing that the state could not afford a vacuum in local governance. β€œThe people of Osun have spoken through this election, and we remain committed to strengthening grassroots democracy,” Bisi stated.

Meanwhile, legal experts and civil society groups have weighed in on the controversy, urging all parties to respect court decisions while ensuring democratic processes are upheld.

The APC has hinted at pursuing legal action to challenge the outcome of the LG poll, setting the stage for a prolonged legal battle over the legitimacy of the elections.
