Speaking on behalf of the government, Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to fostering a robust partnership with the U.S. “We look forward to strengthening collaboration with the United States across various sectors, including trade, security, and education,” Onyeama said in a statement.
The minister noted that Nigeria and the U.S. share a history of cooperation in addressing mutual challenges, such as combating terrorism, advancing economic development, and improving health outcomes. He emphasized that the Nigerian government hopes to build on this foundation to achieve even greater results under the Trump administration.
President Muhammadu Buhari also extended his congratulations to Trump, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the U.S. effectively. Buhari reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to work closely with the new administration, particularly in areas that align with both nations’ strategic interests.
Observers have noted that Trump’s inauguration has stirred discussions about the future of U.S.-Africa relations, given his administration’s focus on “America First” policies. However, Nigerian officials remain optimistic about sustaining strong ties with the U.S., pointing to longstanding diplomatic, economic, and cultural connections.
As the Trump administration sets its agenda, Nigeria is positioning itself as a key partner in areas of mutual interest, ensuring that the collaborative spirit between the two nations continues to thrive.
