In a move that has intensified political tensions in Ukambani, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has accused Labour Cabinet Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua of orchestrating a campaign to fracture President William Ruto’s support base in the region. This accusation follows a series of meetings convened by Dr. Mutua, notably at Maanzoni Lodge, which UDA insiders allege are designed to undermine the party’s unity and influence in Ukambani.

Dr. Mutua, leader of the Maendeleo Chap Chap Party, has been actively engaging local leaders and constituents, actions perceived by UDA as attempts to position himself as the dominant political figure in Ukambani. Political analyst Peter Mutua suggests that these maneuvers aim to “neutralize Kalonzo’s base and clip his wings,” thereby consolidating support for Kenya Kwanza within the region.

The situation is further complicated by internal dissent within UDA. Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai has publicly criticized Ukambani Cabinet Secretaries, including Dr. Mutua, accusing them of neglecting the region’s development needs. Mbai contends that these leaders have failed to advocate for substantial projects, instead focusing on short-term relief efforts. He has even threatened to lobby for their replacement, reflecting growing frustration among UDA ranks.

Adding to the complexity, former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama, a founding member of UDA, has expressed disillusionment with the party’s treatment of the Kamba community. Muthama alleges that despite their contributions, the community has been marginalized in government appointments, a sentiment that has resonated with local constituents.

These developments have sparked significant unease within the Wiper Party, traditionally dominant in Ukambani. There is growing concern that Dr. Mutua’s activities, potentially backed by President Ruto, are strategic efforts to erode Wiper’s influence ahead of the 2027 elections. An anonymous Wiper insider revealed fears that the Kamba voting bloc could fracture further, complicating efforts to consolidate support.

As the 2027 elections approach, the political landscape in Ukambani is becoming increasingly volatile. The interplay between UDA’s internal conflicts, Dr. Mutua’s assertive positioning, and Wiper’s attempts to maintain its stronghold suggests that the region will be a focal point of intense political maneuvering in the coming years.
