Opposition leader Raila Odinga is facing mounting criticism after throwing his weight behind governors in their ongoing tussle with Members of Parliament. The conflict stems from allegations by MPs that governors are mismanaging funds allocated for county development, sparking heated exchanges between the two arms of government.

Odinga, during a public rally, accused MPs of overstepping their oversight mandate and unfairly targeting county bosses. β€œGovernors are not punching bags for MPs to score cheap political points,” he stated, emphasizing the need for cooperation instead of conflict. However, his remarks have been met with fierce backlash, with critics accusing him of turning a blind eye to corruption and shielding leaders who have failed to deliver.

MPs argue that their role is to hold county administrations accountable for how they utilize public resources. National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah dismissed Odinga’s statements as a calculated move to protect allies who are allegedly under scrutiny. β€œRaila is defending impunity and sabotaging the fight against corruption at the grassroots level,” Ichung’wah said.

Analysts suggest Odinga’s stance may be influenced by his alliance with several governors ahead of the 2027 general elections. By siding with governors, he risks alienating voters frustrated by poor service delivery.

The debate has also ignited concerns about the growing rift between the national and county governments, with observers warning it could derail critical development projects.

As the battle intensifies, Kenyans are left questioning the sincerity of their leaders in prioritizing accountability over political alliances. Whether Raila’s gamble will strengthen his political strategy or backfire remains to be seen, but the controversy has undoubtedly added fuel to the fire of an already contentious issue.
