Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is poised to make history again as the sole candidate for a second term as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The WTO confirmed that no other nominations were received by the November 8 deadline, solidifying her position as the only contender for the role.
As the first woman and first African to lead the global trade body, Okonjo-Iweala has been a trailblazer since taking office on February 15, 2021. Her experience as Nigeria’s former finance minister has equipped her with the expertise to navigate complex global trade dynamics.
Okonjo-Iweala’s leadership has fostered cooperation among WTO member countries, advanced negotiations on key trade issues, and promoted inclusive and sustainable trade practices. Her commitment to strengthening WTO’s dispute settlement mechanisms has also been notable.
The WTO formally began the process of appointing its next Director-General on October 8, allowing member countries until November 8 to submit nominations. With no additional nominations received, Ambassador Petter Ølberg of Norway, Chair of the General Council, confirmed Okonjo-Iweala’s candidacy.
Okonjo-Iweala’s current term will come to an end on August 31, 2025. As she prepares for her second term, expectations are high for her continued leadership in promoting global economic development. Her re-appointment is a testament to her exceptional leadership and expertise.
Okonjo-Iweala’s second term is expected to focus on key areas such as reforming WTO’s dispute settlement mechanisms, enhancing cooperation on climate change and sustainable trade, and strengthening partnerships with international organizations. Her commitment to digital trade and e-commerce is also anticipated to continue.
The WTO General Council will formally confirm Okonjo-Iweala’s second term in the coming weeks, with her re-appointment taking effect from September 1, 2025.
