Second Deadly Train Crash in Egypt in Weeks
On Sunday, October 13, Egypt experienced its second serious train crash in a matter of weeks, leaving many injured. A locomotive collided with the back of a sleeper train traveling from Aswan to Cairo. The accident occurred in Minya province, south of Cairo, resulting in two train carriages falling into the Ibrahimiya Canal.
Local media reports indicate that the Egyptian railway authority is currently investigating the cause of the crash. The Health Ministry has confirmed that at least 20 people were injured and transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Fortunately, the other carriages of the train were unharmed and continued their journey to Cairo.
This incident raises concerns about the safety of Egypt’s railway system, which has seen several accidents in recent years. In response to these ongoing issues, the government has announced various initiatives aimed at improving the rail network. In 2018, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi estimated that around 250 billion Egyptian pounds (approximately $8.13 billion) would be needed to adequately renovate the country’s aging rail infrastructure.
Despite these efforts, train accidents remain a pressing issue, highlighting the urgent need for significant reforms. As investigations into this latest crash continue, many are calling for more immediate action to ensure passenger safety and prevent future tragedies. The recent incidents serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by Egypt’s railway system and the importance of investing in reliable transportation for the nation.
