Opposition figure and human rights lawyer, Muwada Nkunyingi, has openly criticized Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, accusing him of attempting to dictate the country’s electoral process and undermine democratic principles. In a recent statement, Muwada emphasized that Museveni’s control over the political landscape is a direct threat to free and fair elections in Uganda, particularly as the country prepares for upcoming elections.
Muwada’s comments come in the wake of increasing tensions between the ruling government and opposition leaders, with the opposition accusing Museveni of using state machinery to entrench his power. Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, has faced growing calls for reform and accusations of authoritarianism. His administration has been widely criticized for cracking down on opposition figures, curbing freedom of speech, and manipulating election outcomes to maintain control.
“The people of Uganda deserve a transparent, free, and democratic electoral process, not one dictated by the whims of one man,” Muwada said, challenging Museveni’s long-standing dominance over the country’s politics. He called for the strengthening of independent electoral bodies and for international observers to closely monitor the election process to ensure fairness.
This is not the first time Museveni has faced backlash over his handling of elections. In previous elections, opposition leaders like Bobi Wine have accused the government of voter intimidation, ballot stuffing, and widespread irregularities. Muwada’s statements echo the sentiments of many Ugandans who feel their voices are being stifled under Museveni’s rule.

Museveni, now 79, has hinted at plans to run again in the next election, despite widespread opposition to his extended stay in power. His administration defends its actions, stating that they are necessary to maintain stability and development in Uganda.
As the political climate heats up, Muwada and other opposition figures continue to rally support for a more democratic and transparent election process, pushing back against Museveni’s influence. The outcome of the upcoming elections could shape the future of Uganda’s democracy and its political landscape for years to come.
