Nigeria and Niger Forge New Security Deal Amid Tensions
In a significant development despite ongoing tensions, Nigeria and Niger have signed a new security cooperation agreement aimed at enhancing regional stability. The agreement was announced by the Nigerian army on Thursday, following its formal signing in Niamey, Niger’s capital, the previous day. The deal was finalized by the defense chiefs of both nations.
The new accord underscores a mutual commitment to improve collaboration on security issues in the region. A Nigerian army communiqué highlighted that both countries are determined to strengthen their joint efforts for regional stability and security.
The relationship between Nigeria and Niger has been strained since a coup in July 2023 that ousted Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum. The coup also caused a rift within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which had previously threatened military intervention if diplomatic solutions to restore democracy failed. This led Niger, along with Burkina Faso and Mali, to withdraw from ECOWAS in January, criticizing the block for not adequately supporting their fight against Islamist insurgents. The three countries then established the Alliance of Sahel States, focusing on a new military agreement.
Despite reduced involvement, Niger has continued its participation in the Nigeria-led Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which combats Boko Haram in the Lake Chad region. The new agreement indicates Niger’s intention to re-engage more actively in security operations within the MNJTF framework, reflecting a renewed commitment to regional cooperation.
