Suspect in Dismembered Bodies Case Escapes Police Custody in Kenya
A suspect detained over the discovery of dismembered female bodies in Kenya’s capital has escaped police custody, officials reported Tuesday. Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, who is accused of killing 42 women, including his wife, managed to flee alongside 12 other inmates who were being held for immigration violations.
Gilbert Masengeli, acting Inspector General of Police, confirmed that the escape occurred early Tuesday morning when the inmates cut through wire mesh in their cell and scaled the perimeter wall. The breach was detected when breakfast was being delivered to the cell.
Masengeli noted that preliminary investigations suggest the escape was facilitated by insiders, as officers were stationed to secure the area. As a result, disciplinary action has been taken against eight officers, including both the area and station commanders and the officers on duty.
Khalusha, 33, had been in custody since July following the discovery of ten bodies and various body parts wrapped in plastic sacks in Nairobi’s Kware area. Authorities had obtained a court order to extend their investigation into Khalusha’s alleged crimes for an additional week before formal charges were to be filed.
The escape prompted immediate action, with the police station cordoned off and senior officers dispatched to the scene. Meanwhile, two additional suspects, who were found with phones belonging to some of the victims, are scheduled to appear in court next Monday.
The case came to light after relatives of a missing woman, guided by a dream, led a local diver to the bodies in a quarry. DNA tests identified six victims, but many body parts remain unidentified.
