Meta has announced the launch of the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants, with a total funding pool of up to $2 million, aimed at supporting organizations globally, with a particular focus on regions such as Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Meta outlined that the grant program is designed to solicit proposals from companies looking to utilize its AI technology, Llama, to address social challenges within their communities. The initiative will prioritize applications that concentrate on areas like economic development, scientific innovation, public service, and other fields that have a significant social impact.
The company further explained that selected applicants could receive up to $500,000, with the winners expected to be announced early next year.
Regarding eligibility, Meta stated that the Grant Program is open to organizations in countries where local laws do not prohibit their participation or receipt of an award. To be eligible, organizations must not be individuals, sole proprietors, or sole-owner entities in the jurisdiction where they are formed. Additionally, the entity must have been legally established before August 5, 2023, and be in good standing under the laws of its jurisdiction. The organization must also have the legal capacity to participate in the program without violating any existing agreements or obligations with third parties.
Moreover, organizations are required to appoint and authorize a single individual, referred to as the βApplicant,β who must be an employee or affiliate of the organization, at least 18 years of age, and meet the age of majority in their jurisdiction, to act on behalf of the organization in submitting the proposal.
The application window for the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants opened on Monday, August 5, 2024, and will close on Friday, November 22, 2024. Interested organizations are encouraged to apply here.

To support potential applicants, Meta will host a series of regional events, including virtual events, in-person hackathons, workshops, and training sessions. These activities are scheduled to take place in various locations, including Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Korea, Latin America, North America, Pakistan, Singapore, Sub-Saharan Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam.
These sessions are intended to provide technical guidance and mentorship, fostering the development of impactful Llama 3.1 applications tailored to local contexts. Additionally, organizations participating in these events may be eligible for specialized awards of up to $100,000.
