The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert to its citizens in Nigeria in anticipation of nationwide protests scheduled from August 1 to 10. The alert, announced through a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, underscores the potential security risks associated with the forthcoming demonstrations.
The U.S. Embassy emphasized that the decision to issue the alert was made “out of an abundance of caution.” The embassy’s operations in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos will be limited to essential staff only on Thursday, August 1, and Friday, August 2, 2024. During this period, the consular sections will provide reduced emergency services for American citizens, and all visa appointments have been cancelled.
Non-essential embassy staff have been advised to remain at home to avoid disruptions. Media reports suggest that protests in Abuja are expected to convene at Eagle Square from mid- to late-morning. In Lagos, protests may begin as early as 8:00 a.m. or 9:00 a.m., with primary locations identified as Alausa Park, Freedom Park, and Peace Park. Additional possible protest sites in Lagos include Nahco Bus Stop (Airport Road), Marwa Bus Stop (Lekki-Epe Expressway), and Ikeja “Under the Bridge” (Intersection of Obafemi Awolowo and Allen Avenue).
The embassy’s statement also indicated that protests could occur at other times and locations in Abuja, Lagos, and other cities across Nigeria in the coming days. It highlighted potential risks such as roadblocks, checkpoints, traffic congestion, and physical confrontations based on past occurrences.
Moreover, the embassy warned of the possibility of terrorist groups exploiting the protests to conduct attacks. As a precaution, U.S. citizens were urged to avoid areas of protests and large crowds, exercise caution if they unexpectedly find themselves near demonstrations, and monitor local media for updates.
The embassy advised citizens to maintain awareness of their surroundings, keep a low profile, and verify their flight schedules with airlines if they have travel plans. Additionally, it recommended reviewing personal security plans, keeping cell phones charged for emergencies, and carrying proper identification at all times.
