Robert Downey Jr. returns to Marvel as Doctor Doom

In a stunning twist at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H panel, Robert Downey Jr. revealed he would be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as the iconic villain Doctor Doom. The surprise came as Downey Jr. removed his mask, revealing himself amid a group of hooded figures dressed as the infamous character, known for his mastery of both sorcery and science.

“I like playing complicated characters,” Downey Jr. said to a roaring crowd as fans chanted his name. The Russo Brothers, directors of the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” expressed their excitement about Downey Jr.’s new role. They emphasized that despite his new villainous mask, the goal remains the same: to create an unforgettable cinematic experience.

Adding to the excitement, the panel announced another major villain joining the MCU: Galactus. The cosmic entity will be the antagonist in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” directed by Matt Shakman, who previously helmed “WandaVision.”

The panel was packed with memorable moments, including a lively performance by a “Deadpool choir” inspired by “Deadpool and Wolverine.” Marvel president Kevin Feige proudly noted that the film set a new box office record as the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever. During the panel, various iterations of Deadpool danced around the floor to Madonna’s “Like a Prayer,” adding to the festive atmosphere.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” has achieved the largest domestic box office opening of 2024, with U.S. and Canadian sales expected to hit between $175 million and $185 million by Sunday, according to Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.

Later, the cast of “Captain America: Brave New World” took the stage, with lead actor Anthony Mackie discussing his portrayal of the iconic superhero. Mackie highlighted how his character, Sam Wilson, differs from Chris Evans’ version of Captain America. “Sam is surrounded by a host of intricate characters that help him move through the plot of the story. He’s not so much a muscle-bound guy; he’s more of a cerebral, thoughtful character,” Mackie explained.

Adding to the excitement, Harrison Ford made a surprise appearance, playfully mimicking the Hulk and chasing Mackie around the stage. Ford, who replaces the late William Hurt as ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, humorously remarked, “It’s been like this for a long time,” and expressed his pride in joining the Marvel universe.

David Harbour, dressed as his “Black Widow” character Alexei Shostakov, made a dramatic entrance through the audience. He joined the stage to address his fellow “Thunderbolts” cast members with a humorous monologue, complaining about his idea for them all to dress up for the film being ignored.

Overall, the Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con was a showcase of exciting announcements and surprise appearances, leaving fans eager for the future of the MCU. From Robert Downey Jr.’s unexpected return as Doctor Doom to the introduction of Galactus and the dynamic new directions for beloved characters, Marvel continues to captivate and thrill its audience.
