August 1 Protest: IGP Reacts to Explosive Device Detonation in Lagos

In a swift and commendable operation, the Nigeria Police Force successfully discovered and detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way in Ikeja, Lagos State, on Wednesday. The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, praised the officers involved, particularly the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Unit, for their prompt and professional response.

The discovery of the explosive device comes amidst heightened security concerns in the region, particularly with the August 1 protest events drawing significant attention. The incident underscores the persistent threat posed by such devices and the critical importance of vigilance and preparedness.

In an official statement signed by Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, IGP Egbetokun emphasized the necessity for public cooperation and awareness. “Where one encounters an unfamiliar or suspicious object, please do not touch or move it. Rather, keep a safe distance and immediately inform the Police,” the statement advised. This guidance aims to minimize the risk to civilians and ensure that trained professionals handle potential threats safely.

The IGP’s statement further highlighted the ongoing efforts of the Nigeria Police to investigate the origins of the IED and track down those responsible for its placement. “The Nigeria Police is working tirelessly to investigate further the source of the bearers of the IED planted in Lagos, dismantle their plans and apprehend those involved,” it read. This initiative underscores the police force’s commitment to maintaining public safety and preventing future incidents.

The successful detonation of the IED without any casualties is a testament to the expertise and dedication of the EOD and CBRN units. These specialized teams play a crucial role in neutralizing explosive threats and ensuring the safety of the public. Their actions on Wednesday have likely averted a potentially devastating incident, reaffirming the importance of their work.
